I'm visiting. This town rolls up their carpets by 9pm ish it seems. It's 9:30pm and I'm looking for dinner, steak preferably...... Trusty Yelp names at least 6 "steakhouses" but all but one of them closes around this hour.... Leaving the Butcher Block Steakhouse as my dinner house of choice. My dinner partner and I, both meat lovers walked in very enthusiastic and hungry for a nice steak. We glance at the menu and ordered "cowboy", 16 oz bone in ribeye and "Delmonico 14 oz boneless ribeye for our entrees. Each entree comes with 2 sides, selected off a list of maybe a dozen selections. (Too many in my opinion) but that said,we ordered 4 different for tasting purposes. We both ordered medium rare and both of us got rare...trying to be medium rare. My dinner partner was polite and chose to eat what he got. I on the other hand returned my steak (waiter hands me a plate and asks me to place my steak on it so he can take to back ... What??? re grill the steak???? Oh well.. Im guessing kitchen wants to go home.....) I will admit they did come back with a good recovery on my steak. A bottle of wine and 2 appetizers accompanied our meal. The wine selection is nominal at best. (They ran out of the Cabernet of our choice) . The appetizers- fried green tomatoes - prepared medium which was good, too much batter and mozzarella not melted through. The marinara more than likely came from a jar. Second, fried onion rings sliced large enough to retain the onion flavor and texture without getting lost in its batter. The dip though was supposed to be (according to the menu) ranch jalapeño flavor and we got some sort of blue cheese .... The pricing - Ribeye bone in= $29, Ribye boneless = $26 Left without dessert so the kitchen and bar can close to go home. Bartender starts to scrub down his bar top with cleaner, which I guess is good BUT We're sitting on the bar having our dinner... Go figure! Moral to the story? Eat early in Cedar Rapids or don't expect a "meal" OR look for a sports bar type instead. Butcher Block IMHO is a "wanna be" steakhouse, more of a casual restaurant and sports bar. I heard their Sunday brunches are good... The jury is still out on this place.

Noon on a snowy Saturday, empty bar. Grabbed a stool and was greeted before i had my coat off, and both drink and food menus in front of me. The bartender was chatty and knew the full menu, helping me to choose the delicious pastrami cheese hamburger. I ordered it medium rare, but out was closer to medium, nothing too bad. The burger was still fantastic, the pastrami giving the beef a robust flavor. I'd have it again anytime. Full disclosure: I know many of the staff, so take my account of great service as you may. They take their work seriously, though. Watching the fish in the giant saltwater aquarium is also a nice distraction while you throw back a pint of Great River Dirty Blonde ale. All their beers on tap are made in Iowa and they have a large bottle selection.

Visiting from Chicago and have to say one of the best freakin burgers I have ever had: Gouda burger with sweet potato fries. With great service to back it up along with a good atmosphere. Totally recommend!!

I gave this place a try for dinner when it first opened and was pleasantly surprised. The dinner menu is not large but does offer some good variety. The service was a little slow(first week open so not a major concern) but very friendly and professional. Since then I have been back a number of times for lunch and it is definitely my favorite lunch spot. The sand which menu is definitely the highlight of the food. There is a lot of variety with not your average type burgers and sandwiches. The Cajun chicken with the pecan bacon is awesome. No clue where they are getting the chicken from but the breasts are huge and cooked perfectly with great seasoning. Sometime will have to try the Monster burger: 1/2 lb burger, 1/2 pork, 1/4 pastrami, coleslaw............... They have a nice selection of wine, spirits and beer.

We were here in July and had the fish tacos and friend lobster tail along with a local stout. It was after 10pm and happy hour prices. It was fantastic and helped us make the decision to move to Cedar Rapids in the future.

The menu and price point is great the food was really good, seems like a fun place to hang out, they have a pretty cool fish tank, small bar area and an upstairs for private parties!

Not that exciting. T-Bone was pretty thin but cooked correctly. Not sure if it had been frozen. The honey butter, unfortunately, was outstanding. Just didn't excite me. Agree with reviewer about the servers and table assignors. Probably won't go back. Sorry.

Came here with my fiancé for his dad's birthday. The mac & cheese and steak that my fiancé got was amazing!! I got a chicken sandwich I think it was blackened chicken or something.. I died and went to heaven. The service was slow but understandably slow due to the fact that they were under staffed. It was worth it we will definitely be coming back!

The food is pretty darn good. I had a caprese chicken sandwich, and it was amazing. There's a wide variety from steak to burgers to salads. It would be a great place for people with varying tastebuds. The wait staff was wonderful, and there were good beers on tap. I would definitely recommend it!

For those who read the Yelp reviews, I might suggest reading my review first of winifred's restaurant. Our experience at winifred's was terrible. Now, lets talk about BUTCHER BLOCK STEAKHOUSE! Before walking out of Winifred's because their steakhouse was out of steaks on their menu, I called BUTCHER BLOCK and asked if they had any shortages of steak or Maytag Cheese (winifred's had no tenderloins, bone in rib steak or maytag blue cheese per our waitress) they responded they had everything and I said we would be right over! Never again will I go to winifred's. We were greated at the door by the gentleman who had taken my call and offered immediate seating. Our waitress Mindy was a joy and took excellent care of us. The chef of the evening (and I apologize I forgot his name) prepared an excellent meal of well prepared steaks and side dishes. I had the rib eye (medium rare-perfect) and my girlfriend had the tenderloin (medium-perfect) we had sides of creamed spinach, spinach salad and their rosemary potatoes. I had Bearnaise sauce with my steak. The service was excellent and food was excellent and made up for the bad start we had at "the other restaurant". Final Comment; as someone who has been personally associated with the restaurant business for over 40 years (in New Orleans), I seek service and food preparation and presentation very much. Atmosphere at BUTCHER BLOCK is simple and that at the other restaurant more dark '70's' "fancy". I would chose BUTCHER BLOCK and have no need to ever return to winifred's

I was turned on to the Butcher Block by a trusted friend so I had to try it. We had a party of 5 on Friday night and amazingly waited less than 5 minutes. The place was packed and very LOUD which made it a little difficult to converse. 5 people, 5 different dinners and everybody loved their food. I had the NY Strip steak which was perfect. Others had fish tacos, a burger and a salad. The house wine was very nice as well. Will definitely come back when I am in CR again.

Stopped in for lunch, I would recommend the Caesar Salad. 1/2 a salad was plenty along with the onion rings for an appetizer. Son ordered a pulled pork on a pretzel bun and the amazing sweet potato fries with orange marmalade on top.Yum!! Our waitress was sweet. Would love to try their steaks someday for sure!

This restaurant lacks confidence. They really don't know who they want to be. Are they a grille? Are they a steak house? Are they all things under the sun type place (aka TGIF)? Service was poor. Our waiter would never directly look at us. Hence a lack of confidence. I'm a vegetarian so menu options are always limited, but providing my only option of a veggie burger isn't really an option. Also, my waiter didn't even know they had two different veggie burgers on their menu. I ordered a pop and only got water and the waiter never remembered. My parent's food was sub-par too. Soggy bread, poorly cooked fries, and just way too much salt. I won't going back. You are given eight different options for a side and half of them were out that night. This places needs to seriously consider who they are and what they want to be as a restaurant or they will be out of business soon.

Stopped in here for a quick app and a drink. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We tried the poutine, which was good, but not great. They were out of cheese curds for the top so we tried it with shredded cheese. The fries were a little under cooked, and with the sauce on top, made it a little soggy.

The food was good probably one of the best cesar salads I have had. The steaks were okay, for the price you pay I would have expected more from the seasoning. The outside patio and the overall dining experience was great, the wait staff was very attentive and I liked the overall interior and exterior design of the restaurant. It seemed like it would be a fun place at night especially during the summer. Also for a place that calls itself a steakhouse I would have expected more than just 6 steak options.

Was in business on town and this was suggested by the desk clerk at the hotel. I had a sirloin with Mac and cheese and creamed spinach. The sirloin was very good but the Mac and cheese was even better. Service was pretty good and kept up with us pretty good.

In my personal quest for the best bleu cheese burger in the area, we have a new clubhouse leader. No dressing and not just any bleu cheese, but the king - Maytag - accompanies bacon atop prime beef to make one outstanding burger. I'm anxious to return to try the Cuban - another of my favorites - and for a steak dinner. A long time coming, this upscale sports bar is ideally located near Coe College, which should provide a steady stream of patrons for the company that brought us Riley's.

Had the 16 oz bone in ribeye and it was seasoned and cooked to perfection! Caesar salad was great with the addition of roasted red peppers. Tomato & Roasted red pepper bisque was perfectly creamy. Great selection of craft and local beers. Very clean and nice mid day atmosphere. Kendra was a wonderful bartender and the cook Tony came out and asked about the meal. All around one if my better dining experiences of the year! I'll be back!

Service is really inconsistent, food is great. This restaurant is owned by the same family that owns and operates Riley's. I'll explain 3 of the visits I've had here, and why I keep coming back. Visit 1: Our waiter had long curly black hair, and he was very knowledgeable of all the food on the menu. He was really helpful in recommending food and drinks (most especially beer). Food was great, most especially the sweet potato fries with syrup. Oh my were they good! 5-stars! Visit 2: Our waiter was a white guy in his early 20's. He was very busy so he essentially just took our order and nothing else. The worst part was that we were put in a 2-seat tall table in the far corner of the dining room. This is THE WORST seat in the house for a lot of reasons. 1) he neglected us. 2) they seated too many people at the long table next to ours, so we were trapped. Literally we couldn't get out of there without asking someone at another table to stand up. Once that table was set down, our waiter could literally not access us. Our drinks stopped getting filled, and when he came by with the check (finally), he had to fully extend himself over the church pews in the next booth and HAND me the check. WTF DUDE?! When we got up, like I said, we asked people at the next table to stand up and MOVE THE TABLE so we could exit. So, that's definitely unsafe and against fire code... 1-star. Visit 3: Our waitress had short straight black hair. She was pretty good early on, but then she got slammed with a big table with kids. The parents were doing a crap job of controlling their kids, which meant the waitress had to pick up the slack, which meant we had to make sacrifices because they were being negligent parents. I can't really fault the waitress for the role she played, she did her best, but her service was below expectations. We tipped her over 20% though, because we didn't blame her... 3-stars.

First the good. The steak. Now the bad. Almost everything else. Poorly trained wait-staff. Waitress knew nothing about the beer and even less about the liquor selection. Ten min. through the door before I received a cocktail. No bartender even behind the bar. Noticed plenty of employees smoking out back, though. No type of bread offered with meal. Really? Ordered asparagus, received cold, barely cooked broccoli. Bun for burger was nearly burned on flat-top and super dry. Microwave obviously in use to heat sides, poorly at that. Heard table next to us complaining to mgr. Should have not even ordered at that point. One star for steak only. Just moved to CR and definitely won't be back here!

My experience here was bad enough that I made an account just for this review. Staff is slow but courteous, however couldn't cook a steak properly with 3 tries. I ordered a medium rare bone-in cowboy ribeye. What I received three times was neither of those things. The first steak i received looked very presentable topped with blue cheese and sautéed mushrooms, but was completely raw and was not a bone-in ribeye. Now I do like it somewhat bloody now and then but this cow was still mooing! The waitress agreed and immediately took it back to the kitchen and stated a new one would be brought out. The second steak brought out by the manager was also raw and taken back. The third was actually cooked, albeit to a medium well doneness and still not a bone in ribeye. Resistance seemed futile at this point and I decided a slightly overdone steak will have to do. It ended up being somewhat dry and flavorless, although my dog did enjoy the leftovers. I will say the side dishes were decent, especially the sweet potato fries with marmalade. My girlfriend had the mahi which she said was ok. They used zatarans for the dirty rice side it came with which was a little disappointing. Overall a 1 out of five star experience but I will note the manager did buy me a drink to smooth things out a bit. Really though the idea of a steakhouse that cant cook a steak properly is just silly. Hopefully this was just a bad night for them.

Bar did not have a designated bartender..ordered beer and cocktail..got beer instantly..cocktail 10 minutes later...appetizer did arrive..ordered ceasar salad..different than what I expected but was still good..ordered filet with asparagus and salad..got broccoli instead which was still crunchy and not even warm!!! I almost needed to order ranch..boyfriend ordered hamburger with Mac n cheese..Mac n cheese totally microwaved!! Cold in the middle and hot on outside

We went to Butcher Block Steakhouse for lunch and the food was good (fish tacos were good, spicy, seemed like they needed more salt though; sweet potato fries were decent, the sweet marmalade on them was different but tasty). Service was good (a tad slow, but it was lunchtime and they had many, if not all, tables filled). The ambience was okay (very 'bar-like' with stools around every table, just threw me off guard seeing that it says 'Steakhouse' in the name, but it was very clean and pretty comfortable). The menu looks awesome, I would definitely go back to try more things!

If I had written this review a couple months ago I would have given 5 stars and sung praises to the heavens. It wasn't just that good, the place was fantastic!!! What a difference a couple months can make. The place started really well. Tried the Pastrami Burger, the "Kick'n Mac n Cheese", various other sandwiches and meal, and, oh... the pork shanks were to die for. Never did like the service, but the food was so good I could actually overlook it. Then, about February (2013) they started to slip. What was fantastic started to just be 'good'. They took the pork shanks off the dinner menu, but left them on the appetizer menu (I could live with that). I tried a steak, and it was actually one of the worst steaks I have ever had. The Chicken Marsala was disappointing. Even the "Kick'n Mac n Cheese" took a step backward. The sandwiches and burgers were still pretty good, though. Just wasn't enough to keep us going every week, like we had been for awhile. Then, we didn't go for a couple months, until a couple weeks ago when I was craving the pork shanks specifically... only to learn that they had been removed from the menu entirely and were not an option at all. So, I got something else that had been previously fantastic (Big Dipper Beef Sandwich, I think), and it was good... but just good. On to other stuff... Prices: Not bad, really. I'm ok with that. Atmosphere: There are two main sections... the bar area, and the dining area. You can dine in either. The bar area is always loud and obnoxious. I have never eaten in there and would turn around and leave if that were the only option... which we have done a couple times. The dining area is better, relatively. Service: Better now, but was horrible in the beginning. Overall: It's all relative, I guess. If it had always been just good, I might not mind. But, it has fallen A LOT since they first opened. Right now, the place really deserves only 2 stars, but I'll give it 3 stars in the hopes they fix what needs fixing.

Love this restaurant and Love the atmosphere. Prices were very reasonable and the service has obviously stepped it up, because they were great! I had a pulled pork sandwich that I think was the best I've ever had! I forgot my IPhone at the table and the server or host immediately called a number on my phone list and I was able to retrieve it within a few minutes! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

the food was ok and the drinks were ok, The owners kids were running around smashing peanuts in the ground, and I heard the owner whisper to their friend and say "who cares, ill have some one clean it up" that kinda killed the place for me... treat your staff well and maybe ill return.

This is an awesome little spot that was put together really well, unfortunately the owner hired a bunch of young coeds who have never been in the service industry before. I've been there three times, the food is great and it's got a good vibe, but each time there are problems and noone takes care of them. The first time my food was prepared wrong and never fixed, the second time a server spilled a tray on the table beside me and the owner kept talking to his buddies and never came over to take care of the situation and the third time I sat at the bar and couldn't get the bartender to refill my empty glass, because she was too busy taking shots with the off-duty employees.

Service was good. When ordering burgers, they ask how you want them cooked. I ordered medium rare, and it arrived brown with no pink in it. Since it was ground chuck, there was less fat in it, making it dry. Had uninspired cole slaw. For $9, I was hoping for more. Someone at our table had a steak and the Mac N' Cheese and loved it. It looked great. Decor is very nice for what they had to work with. Some tables have a tableside TV if you want to avoid talking to your dining partner. It was nice to see them supporting local Iowa beers on tap.

A group of 6 of us came here for dinner & were very pleased. The drink service started out a bit rocky as 2 of us were brought the wrong drink & 1 had to be remade. Eventually the drinks were corrected & we moved on to ordering entrees. I had te salmon entree. It was absolutely delicious & I was extremely pleased with the portion size as I couldn't come close to finishing it all. The entree was served with 2 sides (I chose their kic'n Mac and cheese which was amazing & the asparagus which was also great.). It also came with a side salad. Three of the people got different burgers & all were well received. We will definitely be back.

Had reservations on Saturday and arrived about 10 minutes early. We heard the hostess telling customers that the wait time without reservations was 45 minutes. After 45 minutes of waiting we checked with the hostess as to why our reservation time was not honored and were told that "we can't just ask people to leave". After an hour we were ready to leave and the hostess finally seated us. They could tell we were unhappy and the manager asked if we wanted a round of drinks, but that was too little too late. Food was pretty good, but the service needs to be improved. Watched many people walk out the door due to the wait time.

As a past general manager for a full service restaurant, I tend to look at things as a manager. Service poor? What is really causing the problem, because it is not always the case of a bad food server. Etc. So Saturday night my husband (a previous manager of a pizza place) and I decided to try the Butcher Block. We like to support local business and enjoy the variety a local menu can provide. We didn't even make it to the actual food. We were turned off by the kitchen door standing wide open to the outside and allowing us a look inside the cook line. During rush, every kitchen gets a little messier. But looking at overflowing trash that was so high it reached above the counter level. Next to the trash, was a tray of rolls(?) getting ready to go into the oven. Outside were trash and boxes and dirty dishes (dishwasher behind?). As we stood and watched the kitchen produce food, I saw a cook reach up into the microwave and pull out a container of sauce (?). He then stirred it slightly and dipped his finger into it and popped it into his mouth. It must have been good, because he carried it down to who needed it. This cook then stayed on the line and began to work on making food. At this point we canceled out phone ahead and when my husband told the hostess why, she seemed unconcerned. If you are going to keep the back house messy and hire slobs, at least keep the door shut and leave us only guessing. We won't be going back to try again, plus the photos we took with our cell phone were sent to the health department.

I've been excited to try this locally owned steakhouse for quite some time. A Sunday night a friend and myself chose Butcher Block over the likes of Texas Roadhouse (TRH), Outback, and Red Lobster (Red Lob). I must say the service was excellent and the restaurant itself is well kept. The meal starts off with bread buns. The buns are very plain yeast rolls which is alright and hardly the part of the meal that makes or breaks the overall experience. The butter that is served with the buns however is far too sweet to enjoy. I ate the remainder of the buns plain without any butter the rest of the meal. My main course was the 20 oz. Bone-In Ribeye. There were portions of the steak that appeared to be well done and others that appeared to be very rare. The flavor of the steak was very lacking and for a Ribeye appeared to be exceptionally lean. The quality of the steak is pedestrian at best. I often feel locally owned restaurants have a flavor and charm that improves the overall enjoyment of the meal over it's chain restaurant counterparts. Not in this case. The steak tasted like something you would get at your grocery store. Reading the menu they boast that their steak is "USDA Choice". This is hardly a ringing endorsement as there are three levels of meat grades by the USDA: Choice, Select and Prime. Choice being the lowest level of the three and typically the cheaper cuts you find in a grocery store. The other grades of beef are the grades one should typically find in a restaurant with prices in the line of what Butcher Block was charging. The sides were better than average. I had the green beans and broccoli and both vegetables tasted and looked very fresh. However my main goal for coming to a steakhouse was for the steak, and I left very dissatisfied with the outcome. I hope this was an off night for the Butcher Block as I would like to keep my money in the community.

We come here a lot since we work at the hospital. I have also been here three times for supper. We have ordered the pulled pork sandwich steak, steak salad, steak, patty melt and Cuban. All of our food was excellent. At times there do not seem to be enough wait staff. A couple of times we were brought the wrong food and it was immediately corrected. I have had the sweet potato fries a few times and sometimes they come out drizzled with marmalade and sometimes not. Another thing I have noticed is sometimes you get a glass for soda and sometimes at lunch you get a plastic cup which seems cheesy. Stick with the glass. Also you need to ask for sugar which would be nice to have on the table. I also think it is a little pricy for lunch. Still a great place to go.

Had great recommendations to come to this place. Perfect time to try it out on my birthday? Good start - sat down right away and had AMAZINGLY fresh and yummy rolls with some sweet butter (devoured!). BUT THEN waited 20 min for drinks, we knew what appetizer we wanted so we were going to get it with the drink order but the waiter dashed away to quick for us to say it. I ordered a well done steak, as I have in other steakhouses with success, I got it and all I could taste was charred steak- didn't taste any seasoning and steak was tough-- couldn't finish it. Would've said something but being a steakhouse I didn't want spit or something crazy for sending it back. The kickin' Mac n Cheese is weird 'kickin', loved the mac n cheese at other Riley's. Not sure if I would go back or not.
